Phase congruency-based detection of circular objects applied to analysis of phytoplankton images

چکیده
Detection and recognition of objects representing the Prorocentrum minimum (P. minimum) species in phytoplankton images is the main objective of the article. The species is known to cause harmful blooms in many estuarine and coastal environments. A new technique, combining phase congruencybased detection of circular objects in images, stochastic optimization-based object contour determination, and SVMas well as random forest (RF)-based classification of objects was developed to solve the task. A set of various features including a subset of new features computed from phase congruency preprocessed images was used to characterize extracted objects. The developed algorithms were tested using 114 images of 1280 960 pixels. There were 2088 P. minimum cells in the images in total. The algorithms were able to detect 93.25% of objects representing P. minimum cells and correctly classified 94.9% of all detected objects. The feature set used has shown considerable tolerance to out-of-focus distortions. The obtained results are rather encouraging and will be used to develop an automated system for obtaining abundance estimates of the species. & 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Automated image analysis- and soft computing-based detection of the invasive dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum (Pavillard) Schiller
A long term goal of this work is an automated system for image analysisand soft computing-based detection, recognition, and derivation of quantitative concentration estimates of different phytoplankton species using a simple imaging system. This article is limited, however, to detection of objects in phytoplankton images, especially objects representing one invasive species–Prorocentrum minimum...
متن کاملComparison of Different Targets Used in Augmented Reality Applications in Ubiquitous GIS
Drilling requires accurate information about locations of underground infrastructures or it can cause serious damages. Augmented Reality (AR) as a technology in Ubiquitous GIS (UBIGIS) can be used to visualize underground infrastructures on smartphones. Since smartphone’s sensors do not provide such accuracy, another approaches should be applied. Vision based computer vision systems are well kn...
متن کاملNovel Automated Method for Minirhizotron Image Analysis: Root Detection using Curvelet Transform
In this article a new method is introduced for distinguishing roots and background based on their digital curvelet transform in minirhizotron images. In the proposed method, the nonlinear mapping is applied on sub-band curvelet components followed by boundary detection using energy optimization concept. The curvelet transform has the excellent capability in detecting roots with different orient...
متن کاملPerformance evaluation of block-based copy- move image forgery detection algorithms
Copy-move forgery is a particular type of distortion where a part or portions of one image is/are copied to other parts of the same image. This type of manipulation is done to hide a particular part of the image or to copy one or more objects into the same image. There are several methods for detecting copy-move forgery, including block-based and key point-based methods. In this paper, a method...
متن کاملImpact of linear dimensionality reduction methods on the performance of anomaly detection algorithms in hyperspectral images
Anomaly Detection (AD) has recently become an important application of hyperspectral images analysis. The goal of these algorithms is to find the objects in the image scene which are anomalous in comparison to their surrounding background. One way to improve the performance and runtime of these algorithms is to use Dimensionality Reduction (DR) techniques. This paper evaluates the effect of thr...
